Price Drop: iDroste

iDroste is currently available in the App Store for free. This app lets you quickly and easily transform your images in Escher like masterpieces, by applying the same image transformation method as the one used by the famous artist in his drawings.

How to create the Droste effect:

  1. Start with a photo that contains a region where you expect the photo to appear again (like a screen, a picture frame, a door/window, a book etc). For best results the pixels in this region should be transparent, but this is optional.
  2. Use the XCenter and YCenter controls to center the spiral over this region.
  3. Toggle the transparency switch if needed and adjust the InnerR in combination with XCenter/YCenter until you get the desired result.
  4. Use the XShift/Yshift controls to frame the overall image.
  5. Hit the "Save Image" button and your photo will be saved in the photo albums.

I just downloaded to try, and the big issue I am having with my 3GS is not slow response after I move sliders, but no appreciable response at all. Sometimes I'll see the image change in response to my tweaks, and other times there's nothing happening at all, and then I'll move another slider, and then the image changes. It's not good.

Even if it were working, the interface is crappy. all the controls are in a small window below the image you are editing, and you have to flip up and down to get from slider to slider, and can't see all the options at once, or remember where you have each one. It's kludgy.

i can kind of see how this could be cool, if it was easier to use, but as is, I can't wait to delete the thing from my iPhone, which is not how I want to feel about this app, especially getting it for free.
