New Universal App: PhotoToaster

Sunday, June 19, 2011 at 7:07PM |

"PhotoToaster is a stunning and impressive photo editor for all" - Glyn Evans

App Store Description: PhotoToaster is a fresh approach to mobile photo editing.

PhotoToaster Features:

  • Powerful Photo Processing: The PhotoToaster combines all the essential ingredients for photo processing in a single product. It employs fast non-destructive image adjustments and provides three different ways to adjust them. The Toaster can do everything from simple lighting adjustments and color corrections to elaborate multi-layer composite effects.
  • Flexible Interface: The PhotoToaster combines the ease of use of a ‘pick from a preset’ app with the power and flexibility of full manual adjustment. Three different editing interfaces are available to provide ease of use for the novice and creative accuracy for the discerning professional. Start with the collection of beautiful global presets, move down to the category presets, or dive right in and adjust individual settings. The edits are non-destructive, so you can experiment all you want.
  • Blazingly Fast Performance: Speed is a major ingredient of the Toaster. You don’t have to let go of a slider and then wait to see the result. The sliders are ‘live’ and the feedback is instant. Selecting a preset renders in less than a second. There’s no waiting with the Toaster.
  • Non-destructive: Non-destructive photo processing means that you can always restore your pixels by just resetting a control back to it’s default state. This allows for a fun and creative editing experience.
  • Creative: The adjustments are combined to provide infinite possibilities. Your photo doesn’t have to look like everyone else's with the Toaster. Even if you start with a preset, you can open the manual settings and adjust the controls until it’s just right for you.
  • Send to a friend or hang on your wall: You can email the result, post it to Facebook or Tumblr, or save a full resolution print quality version.

Technical Specifications:

  • sixteen adjustments
  • dozens of global and category presets
  • numerous border options
  • non-destructive editing
  • live slider updating (6 fps on average)
  • average preset rendering time < one second (with 5 megapixel iPhone4 photo)
  • multi-core support for iPad2 (blazing)
  • image crop (three standard formats)
  • multiple undo
  • high resolution output (up to eight megapixel on iPhone4 and iPad2)
  • save to album, email, sms, facebook and tumblr

Editors comments: I'm not going to write a full review of PhotoToaster, as the video above demonstrates all the apps features and how to use them, so instead, I'm just going to give you my view and then jump straight in my with verdict.

The App

There are 3 types of photo editors, basic 1-click pre-defined ones, then there's the 1-click bells and whistles with sliders ones, and finally there's the all singing all dancing photoshop in your pocket ones.

PhotoToaster falls in to the second category, the 1-click with bells and whistles, and is a nice, easy to use, universal photo editor for your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, that lets you either stick with the 1-click quick fix effects, or lets you take control of the final image with the aid of slider controls and cropping tools.

PhotoToaster lets you apply any number of 1-click pre-defined effects, layering them in any order, one on top of the other, as my sample shot belows shows.

Above: My sample photo that has been cropped, converted to B&W, lightened and then softened using the "Deep Focus" filter.

So what do I think of PhotoToaster?

PhotoToaster is a great little app, that offers something for everyone, whether it's creating stunning results quickly and easily with just 1-click, or tweaking your photos to your hearts content with the advanced controls, and so gets 5 stars from me, and at the introductory price, is a must have.

To celebrate this apps release, East Coast Pixels, the developer of PhotoToaster have very kindly given given me 2 promo codes to give away, so  if you would like the chance of winning one of these limited codes, then complete the following sentence, posting it in the comments section, then over the next few days I will select 2 lucky winners.

iPhoneography to me is and has become an art and a skill to hone and practice just like standard photography. It has become a skill I've been hard at work with for the past year and it has now also become a resource for creativity and art. iPhoneography.com has become my #1 resource for finding the right tools to properly execute and perfect this skill.

iPhoneography to me is an endlessly creative way to create art, capture a special moment, or combine both into something really special. And the best part is having new apps available every day to help explore your imaginative side and try something new.
