Turn your iPhone photos in to works of art with AutoPainter

Sunday, April 24, 2011 at 10:00AM |

AutoPainter is a newish app from the developers of Dynamic Light, and attempts to turn your iPhone or iPad photos into 4 incredibly realistic impressionistic styles.

Above: The painterly FJFXWF4M7NWJ effects of Aquarell, Benson, Cezanne and Van Gogh

But "AutoPainter is actually not an effect, it is the closest thing to watching a real painter. It uses the photo as a reference and automatically paints the scene with different brushes, guided by real-world artists inspired techniques.

As with real painters if you paint the same image multiple times you will get slightly different result." - App Developer YR6YWFALXJEJ.

The styles:

  • Aquarell: Running colors, water removal, dry scratches: it is all there in this wonderful style. Works great on flowers, landscapes, old buildings or even people.
  • Benson: Inspired by work of Frank Benson (1862-1951). This style has a sunny palette with Mediterranean tones. It does enhance inner light and color harmony and it works best on sunny landscapes and outdoors. 4XATPJ4HNMEW
  • Cezanne: Inspired by late work of Paul Cezanne (1839 - 1906). Painted on an artistic paper, the quick brush strokes with warm, and yellows and chalk details will work wonders on flowers and still life.
  • Van Gogh: Inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night painting. You will discover his signature swirls, bended reality and blue tones with orange details M947HH93MYNP.  This style works great on night life photography and landscapes especially if water reflection is involved.

The app is incredibly easy to use, and produces some very pleasing painterly effects. Scattered within this post are 5 promo codes 7FL9F7NELA6H, so if you find them and redeem them in time, then you can try this app for free. Whilst the app is nice and easy to use, the output resolutions is a disappointingly 1280 x 954 pixels, however it is hopped that a future update will provide improved resolution.

None of the versions save at the full input images resolution. I have the iPhone and Mac versions and neither save in full resolution which is quite odd for the desktop version. The Mac desktop version is limited to a max of 2000 pixels in either dimension. This is a real shame as the results are really very good, but if you want to have the images printed as large canvas prints 10 x 8 inches would probably be the max.

I really don't understand why full resolution is such a problem for devs to implement right from the start, eventually most of them do achieve this.

I opened this after I saw it on Twitter and said to myself to read it later because I'm busy with something else. Unlucky me I could grab a code during that time and now they are all gone with no one saying thanks.. XD

Fisheye, Macro and Wide Angle lenses makes your adds multi-functional capabilities to your iPhone or webcam.

Book Review part 1 of 4: Create Great iPhone Photos by Allan Hoffman

Allan Hoffman is a tech writer, blogger and iPhoneographer, and this is very apparent as you read through Allan's new iPhoneography book "Create Great iPhone Photos".

The book is easy to read, and well structure, with chapter 1 covering the evolution of the iPhone camera, from the original 1st generation through to the current iPhone 4, the Photo Album/Camera Roll, including Places, Faces and Events, as well as how to transfer your photos between your iPhone and computer.

Chapters 2 through to 6 covers covers a wide range of photo editing apps, from those that give you that photoshop experience in your pocket, to quick fix, retro and fun apps. Allan covers all the apps in his book with detailed usage guides and tips, helping you get the best out of your iPhone and the many apps he covers.

In chapter 7, Allan talks about how to share your photos through Flickr and social networks like Facebook and Twitter, whilst chapter 8 guides you through sharing them via photoblogs.

In the final chapter [chapter 9], Allan looks at some of the iPhoneographers that have inspired him, like Stephanie Chappe, Tony Cece and MissPixels to name just a few, along with useful resources like "the iPhoneography blog".

Currently priced at $18.70 on Amazon.com or £15.67 on Amazon.co.uk, this is a great book, written by someone who is passionate about this new form of photographic expression, and would make a great read for anyone new to the world of iPhoneography.

Wide Angle and Fisheye lenses provides practical and functional solution for your phone camera. It turn your cellphone camera into a
functional DSRL device. No awkward case, the innovative magnetic design makes easy on and off. This is a must-have item for all iPhone 4 fans.

Book Review part 2 of 4: The Art of iPhoneography by Stephanie Roberts

Looking like an oversized iPhone, and a cross between Chase Jarvis's "The Best Camera is the One That's With You™" and Allan Hoffman's "Create Great iPhone Photos", The Art of iPhoneography written by award winning documentary photographer Stephanie Roberts offers an in-depth look at some of Stephanie's favourite photo apps, Adobe's Photoshop Express, Tilt Shift Focus, Photo FX, Hipstamatic and Lo-Mob, as well as an overview of her other essential iPhone photo apps.

Just like Allan Hoffman's book, the first section covers the iPhone's default camera apps, giving you tips on how to get the best out of them.

Then Stephanie goes on to explore her top apps showing before and after examples of her own photographs, that have been processed with these apps.

Midway through, Stephanie attempts to to inspire the reader with more examples of her iPhoneography, with missions, making the reader look and think about the composition, style and apps used, and this approach has worked really well, and is thought provoking, it even made me think.

As you near the end of the book, Stephanie dedicates a nice section to those iPhoneographers that have impressed and inspired her, and many others, like Dixon Hamby, Dominique Jost and Max Berkowitz to name just a few, giving you an insight in to the way they work, and their photographic styles.

Finally, the book ends with a guide to sharing your photos with the world via Posterous and Flickr, and a short section on useful resources, which includes this blog [thanks Stephanie].

Currently priced at a bargain $12.87 on Amazon.com or £6.49 on Amazon.co.uk, this is a nicely presented, thought provoking and inspiring book, that would suit any new or seasoned iPhoneographer.

Trash your photos with ScratchCam

Friday, April 29, 2011 at 10:01AM |

ScratchCam is a grunge like app that makes your photos look like someone in the photolab has just dropped your negatives on the floor and walked all over them, and done a pretty good job of scuffing and trashing them.

The app is easy to use, simply launch it, select or take a photo, then hit the randomizer icon found in the bottom right of the screen to have the app apply random scratch effects to your photos. When you have a look you like, tap the export icon to either save to Album or export to Flickr or Facebook.

ScratchCam Features:

  • GENERATE countless old-skool 70's horror flick influenced effects including: Awesome black and white variations; Wicked over-saturation & color shift combinations; Heaps of film scratch effects

Overall this is a nice app, with some nice styles and effects that does a pretty good job of giving your iPhone photos that grunged up, trashed look, with almost full-res support [saved file sizes are 2560 x 1913 pixels].

Sigh, another nice app with some nice features!

I wish someone or some company would buy all these apps/sources and bundle all these features into one single app. Shooting->editing->publishing=done.

I just don't like having to run through several apps adding effects saving-opening-processing-saving-etc-etc-etc.

Wishfull thinking I guess ;-)

Book Review part 3 of 4: iPhone Photography & Video for Dummies by Angelo Micheletti

Of the 3 books I've looked so far in the series of book review, iPhone Photography & Video for Dummies by Angelo Micheletti has to be the most disappointing.

Whilst this book does look at the video element of the iPhone, it spends far too much time covering the iPhone's in-built apps, and disappointingly far too much time looking at editing your iPhone photos with iPhoto '09.

Whilst the book does look at photographic related iPhone accessories, like the OWLE Bubo, it is not until chapter 9, that the author explores apps designed to help enhance your iPhoneography.

Currently priced at $13.69 on Amazon.com or £8.50 on Amazon.co.uk, this is a disappointing book, that sadly get a thumbs down from me.

Four Leaf Clover Tattoos

Four Leaf Clover Tattoos

A four leaf clover tattoo is a great way to show pride in your Irish heritage. Or, if you're not Irish, you can still sport one for good luck. The 4 leaf clover is a universal symbol for Ireland. Four leaf clovers are usually a rare find amongst a field of 3 leaf clovers (aka the shamrock clover), which is why they are considered lucky. Actually, the odds of finding one are about 10,000 to 1. True four leaf clovers have three leaves of approximately equal size, and a fourth leaf that will be slightly smaller. To the Irish, each leaf has a different symbolism. The first three leaves represent hope, faith, and love, and the rare fourth leaf represents luck. So if you don't feel you need luck, you could be different and get a three leaf clover tattoo, but if you want the luck, you can get a four leaf clover tattoo!

The Lucky Four Leaf Clover Tattoo

It is impossible to breed for leaf clovers because it is a genetic defect, but some companies do clone them. Of course, this is in its own way symbolic of manufacturing luck, so I feel it sort of takes the meaning out of it. I think any Irish person would tell you that a cloned four leaf clover is not the same as a naturally occurring one! But for those who believe in the luck of the Irish, getting a four leaf clover tattoo may bring you some luck. Sometimes in different tattoos you will also see a 4 leaf clover with playing cards, dice, rabbits'feet and horse shoes. The idea is that some of these other symbols represent luck, so in combination they create an extra lucky four leaf clover tattoo. Dice and cards are symbols of things where luck is needed!

Why Get a 3 Leaf Clover Shamrock Tattoo

St Patrick used the shamrock to represent to the Irish the concept of the holy trinity, which is partly why the shamrock and color green are associated with st Patrick's Day. So you may opt for the three leaf clover shamrock tattoo for religious reasons. This is actually a great idea for Irish Catholics who feel that they have all the luck they need. After all, who needs luck when they have God in their corner? Maybe the three leaf clovers are in a sense luckier than four leave clover tattoos after all!

Images of four leaf clover tattoos

  • A four leaf clover tattoo on the back, with R and S on the left and right, respectively. An X seems imposed on the clover.I see "RXS" on this four leaf clover back tattoo. Perhaps a tribute to luck for a friend or family member who has those initials?
  • An intricate four leaf clover shoulder tattooThis is a great example of a large four leaf clover tattoo. The placement on the shoulder was a good choice.

  • This person has it all. An arm tattoo with the lucky four leaf clover and the godly three leaf clover shamrockThe Luck of the Irish and blessings from God, can't do any better than that!

  • A pretty four leaf clover tattoo on the back of a girl's neck, behind the ear.Maybe placing a four leaf clover tattoo on a certain part of the body brings an appropriate kind of luck. This girl may have been hoping to have luck in a singing career.

  • Tattoo of Four leaf clover on thumb. This man probably was after luck in efforts to plant a garden. Do you get it? Lucky thumb? Green thumb? Lucky green thumb? Yeah, he deserves luck in gardening even if that wasn't what he was after.
