Pixeet's App and Fisheye Lens Shoots Full 360 Degree Photos On iPhones

There are dozens of strap-on fisheye lenses that you can buy nowadays for iPhones. Blame it on Lomography and Hipstamatic, perhaps. Pixeet's goes a step further though, letting you shoot full 360-degree panoramas with the camera lens and free app.

It works by taking four photos with the iPhone's camera, which are then stitched together with the app, creating that 360-degree panorama which your Facebook profile has (probably not) been crying out for. You can see several examples of the panoramas created, here.

Costing $49 for the camera lens and case to hold the lens in place, the app is only available for the iPhone for now, but Pixeet is readying an Android app which will be out in September. [Pixeet]

5 iPhone photo apps worth checking out : Shiny Shiny

Top five camera apps for smartphones

Top five camera apps for Iphones

With the incorporation of cameras in to the phone users just love taking pictures with their camera phones. Be it with the camera phone of 1.3 megapixels or 12 megapixels, users just keep flooding Flickr with their pictures. Here is a list of camera apps that we believe you would enjoy using on iOS and Android platform based smartphones.

Adobe Photoshop Express

Adobe Photoshop Express for Android gives the users a feeling that they are almost carrying the Adobe Photoshop software in their pocket. The app also gives an upload option to the users so they can upload their photos to social networks such as Facebook, Photoshop.com, Flickr and TwitPic.

The facility to edit the photos is present there as well, so the users can apply various effects or borders, apply contrast or even crop the pictures. The first time the Adobe Photoshop Express app is started, the software loads the photos stored in the phone automatically — so the users have to apply minimal effort on their part.

Those who are used to the desktop Photoshop app may be slightly disappointed, but it should be expected on a phone. The tools which are provided are easy to use, but those who are looking for their hardcore filter, should instead opt for their usual PC or Mac. While discussing all this, let's remember this is a free app.

The iPhone app is also free but it too is does not have full featured, but it works effectively enough to make itself useful to the iPhone users. Users can rotate, crop and adjust the colour levels as well which works alright if users have taken pictures under bad lighting conditions or to tackle similar small problems. The iPhone version can also be used to upload pictures on Twitter and Facebook, just like the Android app. Even those who are novices will find the app intuitive enough to learn it effectively.

For Android

Retro Camera (Free)

For most of the users, photographs are important because they take them back in time. Now there is an app for the Android users — Retro Camera - which makes their recent photographs look older. It's not that the app is full of features, but it is unique. The user interface of the app is extremely simple as the screen shows the camera just the way it would appear in real life.

The different type of camera options provided through the app include The Barbel, The Little Orange Box, Xolaroid 2000 and finally the Pinhole Camera which adds a touch of nostalgia to your photos. The app comes both in free and paid versions, so obviously the paid version comes with more detailed cameras and elaborate features.

Processing the photos takes some time (about a minute) but that doesn't mean users cannot take another photo in the meantime. All the photos are queued up for processing of the photographs. Once the image processing task has been completed, the gallery page displays ten photos hanging for drying. Users can use their finger to swipe through the screen to view other photos. The app has been developed with a lot of attention to detail, and the user experience starts from the icon of Retro Camera itself.

PicSay (Pro version Rs 191.11, free version also available)

Working with android based PicSay app, is extremely easy, as once the app is opened, users just have to click "Get a Picture" button to choose the picture they wish to work on. The app also helps users resize their pictures, and the other options include Word Balloon, Title, Stickers, Effects and Export.

The real fun of the apps lies in stickers and effects which let users turn the pictures into statements, simply because they can do so much with the pictures. In terms of effects, there are numerous effects available in the pro version, which is worth the paid app. Users can insert thought bubbles to the photos, and captions, stickers to the images as well. They can change colour schemes too.

Hipstamatic (Paid app for Rs 90)

At the time when other camera apps help you improve your images, the Hipstamatic app, that runs on iOS, does its best to take the users back to the analog technology days. It simulates the viewfinder, the facility of changing lenses, film types and even flashes of the camera. Just by touching the icons, users can change the film type too.

Those mentally very much in the digital age, however, need not worry since they get the option to upload the images to Flickr and Facebook as well.

Photogene (Paid app for Rs 90)

Let's face it, cameras or digital photography is not an iPhone forte, so it's natural users would look for image editing apps to improve their images. Photogene is one such app which comes armed with a simple user interface, and it offers several features not present in its rivals though it doesn't offer some common features as well.

DSLR lens mount for iPhone released | News | TechRadar UK

Photojojo has announced a lens mount for DSLR lenses that is compatible with the iPhone camera.

The adaptor, which is part of an iPhone case, allows Canon EOS or Nikon SLR lenses to be mounted onto the iPhone.

Several different types of lenses can be attached, including telephoto, wide-angle, macro and fixed length, which will only be able to be manually focused once fitted.

Furthermore, only lenses with an aperture ring, such as old film camera lenses, will have the ability to adjust aperture when mounted to the iPhone. Photojojo also say that around 1 to 2 f-stops are expected to be lost when using the adaptor, so if you can't alter the aperture, expect to brighten up the images in post-production.

Since the mount doesn't have a mirror inside as an SLR does, photos taken will be upside down and need to be rotated using an editing app.

Compatible lenses

The Nikon SLR mount works with all Nikon lenses using an F-mount adaptor, while the Canon SLR mount works only with EOS lenses using an EF-mount adaptor, meaning Canon EF-S or FD lenses won't work.

The case, which is made from aluminium, comes with a special UV filter along with 2 loopholes at both ends to allow for a camera strap to be attached and the iPhone and lens hung around the neck.

Photojojo sells a range of camera accessories, and already stocks an iPhone telephoto lens and iPhone video rig.

The adaptor can be bought for either iPhone 4 or iPhone 3, priced at $249.00 (c. £156) and $190 (c. £119) respectively. Find out more at the Photojojo website.

iPhone with fisheye lens

iPhone fisheye and macro lens gallery

  • The fisheye lens does the most impressive job, and could provide lots of opportunities for creative types

  • Or it could just be used as a way to take a fun photo that encompasses your entire office...

  • The macro lens is less impressive, not really adding much that the lens can't do by itself

  • Here's another macro photo with the lens, where you can see darkened corners creeping into the frame

  • But as you can see, the standard lens does an alright job with macro work by itself

  • The iPhone with the fisheye lens attached

The camera aboard the iPhone is probably the most widely used camera in the world at the moment. So it's no surprise that photographers want to expand their possibilities by adding accessories. We've been testing a couple of add-on lenses for the iPhone and are fairly impressed with the results.

Obviously, there's no 'mount' for your iPhone. Instead, a glued washer sticks to the back of the iPhone around the camera lens. The lenses are then held on to the washer by magnets.

Far and away the most impressive, and most fun, is the fisheye lens. As you can see from the images, the lens successfully converted the camera into a wide-angle shooter and we can imagine all kinds of creative types will love this.

On the downside, the macro lens doesn't really seem to add much over the standard lens, and the washer and lens assembly does have a tendency to move around slip off if you're not careful.

Lens mount case lets you use DSLR lenses with your iPhone 4

Lens mount case lets you use DSLR lenses with your iPhone 4 The iPhone 4 takes pretty spectacular pictures straight out of the box, but there are several accessories you can buy to improve (or at least enhance) your photographic explorations. There's the Olloclip, which lets you take wide-angle, fisheye, or macro photographs, and the Dot, which lets you take 360-degree video. Now there's also the iPhone SLR Mount, which allows you to use full-size SLR lenses with your iPhone.

Of course, one of the biggest benefits of the iPhone camera is its conveniently small size, and attaching a large SLR lens to it pretty solidly negates that benefit. It also looks rather ridiculous. However, it gives you many of the benefits of SLR lenses, including manual depth of field and focus control, telephoto, wide-angle, and macro capabilities.

At a hefty $190, the SLR lens mount isn't exactly an impulse buy. But if you're willing to pony up the cash for the chance to use your SLR lenses with your iPhone, it might be worth checking out. The mount is available for both Canon and Nikon lenses, and even has loopholes so you can attach a camera strap.
