Best way to take iPhone Photos

As smartphones (and their apps) become increasingly sophisticated, point-and-shoot cameras are no longer a shutterbug’s best friend. And with new technology comes new obsessive tricks--like these from Adam Bronkhorst’s new book, SnApp Shots: How to Take Great Pictures With Smartphones and Apps.

1. Fake a better lens: The lens on the iPhone is only 5 mm wide, compared with 10 times that on a DSLR. With no optical zoom, blowing up photos means quickly degrading the image quality. Apps like AutoStitch and Pano allow you to piece together panoramic shots.

2. Lighten up: Your phone’s built-in flash likely turns your subject into an overexposed paste face. Cover the flash with paper to soften the effect, or cast a different color: The Hipstamatic app can change the flash to any color of the rainbow.

3. Tilt it: For a more mature- looking trick, try the app TiltShift. When shot from above, the subject of the image appears in razor-sharp focus, while its surroundings appear soft, out of focus, and slightly blurred.

Apple’s next iPhone might be thinner thanks to “in-cell” touch technology.

According to DigiTimes, Apple will likely use in-cell touch panels from Sharp and Toshiba Mobile Display in the iPhone 5. The current iPhone panel has multiple layers with a conductive touch layer put on top of the display. These new panels will combine everything into a single layer.

By combining the display and touch layers of the screen, the iPhone 5 will be thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4/4S. The device should also have better touch responsiveness.iphone 5 render 4-inch

According to Mac Observer, Apple’s current panel providers, TPK Holdings and Wintek, don’t have panels with in-cell technology. TPK is working on a “touch on lens” panel, which is similar but can scale to larger displays. TPK won’t have the panels ready until later this year, however. Both Sharp and Toshiba Mobile Display already have production lines ready to create the panels needed.

The single layer space savings could also allow Apple to place a larger battery to accomodate the power draw of 4G LTE.

According to other recent rumors, the iPhone 5 will also have 4G LTE for data and voice, and a liquid metal back. These are all just rumors for now, and might end up being false. As the iPhone 5 launch draws closer we’ll start to see more accurate rumors. For now we’re just going on what Apple could be planning for the mass production of the phone.

The next iPhone might also be larger than the current iPhone 4S. It’s unclear what changes Apple would make to the device to support a larger screen, however. All we know is the iPhone 5 might have a 4-inch screen instead of a 3.5-inch screen, which has some of us excited.

People that are still waiting for the iPhone 5 will likely be waiting a long time. Some rumors say the next iPhone will launch in June, but many others say the launch is sometime in October. Two months isn’t a long time to wait for a new iPhone, but five months definitely is. Those who need a new phone right now, and want an iPhone, are better off buying an iPhone 4 or 4S instead of waiting.

The dust has barely settled on the new iPad, but, as is always the case, there's another Apple photography patent to check out.

We've all been in situations where someone wants to take a group shot, but there's no way to get the photographer in the photo without setting up a tripod or hassling a passerby to take the photo. Plus, it's unlikely that you'll want to hand over your iDevice or expensive photographic equipment to just anyone on the street.

According to the Patently Apple blog, Apple has filed a patent presenting a new take on the self-timer feature. The photographer would first snap an image of their face so that the device knows who to look out for, then, once that person has re-entered the frame, it would initiate a self-timer countdown.

One thing not mentioned in the patent is any sort of tripod, or wide-angle lens to get everyone in the shot. The diagram also points to the front-facing camera on the iPhone, which is currently only VGA resolution on the iPhone 4S. Perhaps we could expect a higher-resolution front-facing camera, too?

Camera That Share Like an iPhone

One of the charms of having a camera on your mobile phone is its ability to instantly share pictures, which may be the chief reason for the predicted demise of the point-and-shoot camera.

But Samsung has taken a step to reverse that trend by adding Wi-Fi to a broad range of cameras unveiled at the International Consumer Electronics Show in January. The Wi-Fi feature lets people send pictures directly from the camera, similar to the way they do from a phone.

Samsung has put Wi-Fi into a camera before, but never so many at once. This time, the company is adding it to four cameras and one camcorder.

To use the Wi-Fi feature, you first have to set the camera to be recognized on your network – that may mean entering a password. Then you can decide what you want to share from the camera.

It can be set to load all of your photos to your computer automatically when on a shared network. It also can be set to share only selected photos. You can e-mail photos directly from the camera, or upload automatically to sites like Facebook and Picasa.

The cameras also have Wi-Fi Direct, a new standard that lets Wi-Fi devices connect to one another without a router in between, similar to the way Bluetooth does. That means if you have a phone with Wi-Fi Direct, you can send an instant photo from your camera from anywhere your phone can, but instead of a noisy five-megapixel image, you can send a full 16-megapixel masterpiece.

The cameras, some of which will become available in February, others not until April, share the Wi-Fi feature Samsung calls SMART. (Don’t ask me why it’s all in uppercase.)

The flagship is the WB850F ($380), which also features a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, 21X optical zoom, f2.8 lens and three-inch AMOLED screen, and can take 1080p video at 30 frames per second.

Next comes the WB150F ($230), with a 14-megapixel CCD sensor, 18X optical zoom, f3.2 lens and three-inch AMOLED screen, and can take 720p videos.

The DV300F ($200) has a 16-megapixel CCD sensor, 5X optical zoom, f2.5 lens and three-inch TFT LCD screen, and can take HD video in 720p. It also has a 1.5-inch screen on the front of the camera, making it easier to compose self-portraits.

The ST200F ($200) has a 16-megapixel CCD sensor, 10X optical zoom, f3.1 lens and three-inch TFT LCD screen, and can take HD video in 720p. It is available in black, silver, red and purple.

Then there is the video camera in the line, the QF20 ($350), which is also available in a $300 non-Wi-Fi version, the Q20. Both have a five-megapixel CMOS sensor and 20X optical zoom, and can shoot 1080i at 60 frames per second.
